7 Cotton Back Satins
A super lining fabric, made from a silk warp and combed Egyptian cotton weft, in the 8-shaft satin weave, giving a warp face of silk and a weft back of cotton. 8 Cotton Worsted
An American term for cotton fabric made in a twill weave from hard spun cotton yarns. It is finished with a smooth face to imitate worsted. The yarns are all dyed. -
9 Cotton Flannel
An imitation of wool flannel, in all cotton, either plain or twill weave, and raised on one or both sides; 6's to 10's weft used, 30's to 36's twist. -
10 Cotton Packs
These are bags or sacks made of jute in plain weave, 85-in. long, 45-in. wide, weighing about 3-lb. 9 porter 9's warp, 9 threads per inch of 10's (see Jute Counts) -
11 Parchment Cotton
A cotton fabric of very fine structure, plain weave, which is treated in finishing to imitate true skin parchment. -
12 Doriah
Plain weave cotton fabrics in the grey, bleached or dyed state, finished hard or soft, and used by Egyptian natives for clothing. The colours when dyed are either black or blue. A plain-weave cotton cloth in Arabia with corded effects produced by cramming the warp ends. -
13 Indian Mull
Originally fine, closely woven cotton fabrics made in India, in plain weave, about 80 ends and 72 picks per inch, 90's warp, 100's weft. Usually piece-dyed, and used for dresses. Many qualities of plain weave cotton cloths now pass under this term. -
14 Gazi
A coarse and heavy all-cotton cloth made in India and used for winter clothing by the poorer classes. It is said to have originated in ancient times (see Motia Cloth) ————————MOTIA, also GAZIA low class of plain weave cotton cloth woven in India from Indian cotton. The various qualities are used for all domestic and clothing needs of the natives. Usually 30-in. to 36-in. wide, 36 to 48 ends and picks per inch, and up to 28's or 30' warp and weft. -
15 Kalmuck
(1) A coarse woollen cloth made from rough yarns and used for overcoats. The face is very shaggy to resemble a bear-skin. (2) A low grade heavy cotton fabric woven on the Continent also has the term Kalmuck applied to it. The cloth is woven on check looms in a low reed with strong grey cotton warp and two colours of weft. Only one colour appears on each side. Rather soft spun yarn is used for the weft and the fabric is raised on both sides. Construction 36 ends and 50 picks per inch. 16's warp hard spun and 4's to 6's weft. (3) Also low quality plain weave cotton cloth made in Persia. -
16 Bedstout
A twill weave cotton cloth woven in coloured stripes or solid colour. This is probably the bed tick of today. Also called " inlet." Woven in 2 X 2 twill weave. -
17 Blue Baft
A plain weave cotton cloth, shipped to West and East Africa, in 27-in. or 28-in. widths. About 56 X 52 per inch, 18's/20's, plain weave, blue dyed (see Baffetas) -
18 Boi
A heavy union cloth, plain weave, cotton warp, wool weft, about 32 X 36 threads per inch, giving a loose weave; used as a lining. -
19 Boonnee
(From the Hindu word Boonna " to weave ".) A plain weave cotton cloth, woven by the natives of India, with either a red or black border. The red border was worn by Hindu and the black by Mohammedan women. Made 36-in. X 10 yards, and coarser in texture than a muslin (see Saree) -
20 Paras
A plain weave cotton cloth, woven on hand looms in India, 64-in. wide, 62 ends and 72 picks per inch, 38's warp, 44's weft, pure sized. The weave is sometimes 2 & 1 twill.
